Gingerbread House Frosting Recipe

Gingerbread House Frosting Recipe

Gingerbread House Frosting Recipe

Gingerbread houses are fun for kids to build around the holidays.  Use this simple recipe to make icing to hold your gingerbread house together and to attach pieces of candy to the house.

Frosting for Gingerbread houses
1 pound of Powdered Sugar
3 Egg Whites (at room temperature)
1/2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
1/2 tsp. vanilla (optional)

In mixing bowl mix together all ingredients with an electric mixer.  Beat until the mixture is smooth.

Pour into pastry bags and use to attach the gingerbread house pieces together.  For an easy and disposable pastry bag fill a Ziploc sandwich bag with frosting and close the top.  On one of the bottom corners cut a small piece of the corner off the bag.  Manage the flow of icing by cutting a bigger hole if it comes out too slow.

Gingerbread house kits are available at most stores during the holidays … or simply use squares of Graham crackers for the Gingerbread house walls and roof.

Make gingerbread houses at your next holiday party or winter birthday party.  They are a fun craft and party favor all in one!

Entertainers You Can Hire For Parties

Birthday parties consist of presents, cake and some type of entertainment for the party guests.  Activities and party games are a great way to entertain guests or you can hire a professional party entertainer.

There are many different entertainers that can be hired for birthday parties.

Balloon Artist – Makes fun and creative objects from balloons.  Ask if they can make shapes that will fit the theme of your birthday party.  Great party favor for the guests to take home after the birthday party.

Caricaturist - Draw and sketch funny and exaggerated portraits of the birthday party guests.  Fun for everyone to watch and the guests can take home the picture as a party favor.

Character – Will dress up as a character to match your party theme such as Elmo, Cinderella or a pirate.

Comedian – Tells jokes and keeps the party guests entertained with his / her comedy routine.

Clown – Will entertain the party guests dressed as a clown.

DJ – Entertains the party guests and sets the mood of the party with music.

Face Painter – Paints theme related items on the party guests faces.

Magician - Brings a magic act to entertain the party guests.

Mime – Will mimic and shadow party guests without talking.

Puppet Shows – Entertain children with a puppet show.

Reptile Petting Zoo - Brings reptiles and snakes and tells the party guests about them.  Most will let the guests hold and interact with the animals.

Ventriloquist – Brings a dummy and entertains the guests with a ventriloquist act.

Many of the entertainers that you can hire for a birthday party can combine several of these services into one package.  For example a clown or entertainer dressed as a themed character could also paint faces, perform magic or twist balloons.

Most party entertainers have several different packages and prices to choose from for your party.  Ask in advance if they can incorporate your theme into the act.

Silly Bands Book

Silly Bands Book

Silly Bands are everywhere it seems.  I know my two daughters love them and can’t seem to get enough of the fun shaped bracelets.  The two problems we have with Silly Bands are  where do you store them and how can you organize them?

While on Twitter the other day I ran across an answer to both of the problems – the Silly Band Book.

The Silly Band Book would be a great birthday gift for girls.  And it would also be a wonderful party favor to let guests take home with them after the party.

SillyBandBook™ Arrives!

Birthday Thanking Tips (for kids and their parents)

Birthday Thanking Tips (for kids and their parents)

Birthday Thanking Tips (for kids and their parents)

Being grateful and classy can also be . . . fun!

Okay, there’s a kid’s birthday in your house. It’s a special and exciting time for both you and your little ones. You’ve got a lot of celebrating planned, and a lot of fun is on the horizon. Sometimes, though, when we think about the good times involved with a birthday, we overlook the thanking afterwards. Why can’t expressing gratitude be part of the fun? Why can’t showing good manners be a positive experience for everybody in the family?

Well, at TodayIsFun.com, we think thanking can be fun, along with all the other kids’ activities surrounding birthdays.  It can also help kids feel good about themselves.  And thanking people is a good habit to get started at a young age, of course.

Below are some of our fun and fitting birthday-time thank you tips:

The Thank You Speech at the Birthday Party
As an adult, there are occasionally parties thrown in your honor: weddings, for instance, engagement parties, baby showers, and yes, even the occasional birthday party.  What do you always do at any party that is thrown in your honor?  You thank everybody for coming, right? You never are required to make a long speech (unless you’re a victorious politician), but you do really need to say a few words of thanks.  Why not start this with your kids? Why not prep them for a future of being polite and gracious?

For both kids and adults, saying thank you shouldn’t be too scary or in any way a big deal.  The guests all came to the party because they like you (or in this case, your child), right?

Have your child stand up and say thanks to the assembled party-goers.  Right before the cake would be a good time for this, since everyone will be gathered around (and awaiting the delicious food finale).  Right after the cake is served would work fine, too. All your child needs to say is, “Thank you everybody for coming to my party!”

Talk to your kid beforehand, so you’re on the same page as to what will happen and why! Maybe you guys can brainstorm some special, fun, or funny words to be said.

This mini-speech will make quite a positive impression on the other parents, we promise!  And who knows, you might even start a politeness movement on your local birthday party circuit.

And at the risk of over-doing the thank yous
Birthdays are a very special time for kids, of course, and they should be.  Birthdays are also a time when people make an extra effort for the honoree.  So, especially if your child is older, a thank-you for Mom and/or Dad is in order.  Nobody needs to be a martyr (“I was up all night folding Sponge Bob Square Pants napkins for your party!”) and nobody needs to need a thank you.  But it is a good habit to start — even for kids — to express some gratitude to the supporting cast and crew!  So, encourage your kid to thank Mom and Dad. Tell your little ones to thank, your spouse.

Thank You Notes
As kids get older, they become subject to the time-honored obligation of thank you notes.  Did anyone reading this, as a kid, think that writing thank you was a fun use of their time?  But writing thank you notes is indeed classy, polite, and the “right” thing to do.  How can you make them a bit less painful for your child?  Here are some thoughts:

Have your kid use a different, positive adjective for each thank you letter.  Instead of “thank you for the great toy monster set,” what about the “spectacular” toy monster set?  The “superb” toy monster set?  There are plenty of positive words that could be used: magnificent, marvelous, splendid, stunning, unrivaled, and so forth.  What other words can you guys come up with?  Have your child be sincere, but use some interesting, new vocabulary words.

If your child is too young to write, they could draw a little picture for each thank you card. This still counts as a nice way of expressing gratitude. And if your child is old enough to write, they could still draw a picture, if they’re artistically inclined.  Such drawings add a nice, personal, and unique-to-your-child touch.

A lot of thank you notes written by kids are a bit “standard.”  That is, they all sound pretty similar, only the names and item in question change.  That’s not a problem, but it does make writing them monotonous.  In addition to the two thank-you-note writing suggestions above, your kid could also add variety and interesting details to the back of the envelope.  While a parent should write the address on the front of the envelope, the kid could write “thanks!” on the back, or draw a little happy face.

Tasty Thank Yous
Assuming that your guests live reasonably nearby, you guys can cook up some thank you treats.  Bake some cookies (or other delicious goody), have your kid write a quick note, and drop them off in friends’ mailboxes.  Baking can be a fun activity for kids, and making stuff for others can be fun, too.  This version of thank you’s is sure to be appreciated and remembered.

Birthdays should be fun and special, from start to finish.  That includes the thanking.  Turn thank yous into an educational and engaging activity for parents and kids alike.

Make A December Birthday Special

Make A December Birthday Special

How to Make a December Birthday Special

Making a Birthday special when it falls in December and especially near Christmas can be a challenge.  Here are a few hints and tips from readers that can help make it less challenging.

Be sure and separate the Birthday from Christmas.
1.  Don’t wrap birthday presents in Christmas wrapping paper.  Don’t even use solid red, green or white.  Make sure it is birthday paper – bright and cheery.  Don’t scrimp and use Christmas bows on the present – splurge and wrap it up with tulle or fancy ribbon.

2.  Put up birthday decor.  A sign, banner, balloons, streamers and/or decorations will help separate it completely from the Christmas decorations.  Try and set up one room with only birthday decorations (the kitchen or dining room) and leave the Christmas decorations out until after the birthday is over.

3.  Make a birthday cake.  Every child (and grownup!) loves to have their own cake complete with candles to blow out.  Don’t try and pass off a Christmas cake or pie as the birthday cake.

4.  Don’t give presents that are Birthday/Christmas presents.  Remind family and friends that you are trying to make the birthday special and separate by not combining the two.

Some fun things to do to make the December birthday special:
Forget about Christmas for the day.
Go out to dinner or the movies - make it a day of pampering or attend a special sporting event.  Dress up fancy and have a wonderful night out to celebrate the birthday.  The trick is to not do anything that involves Christmas on this day – no Christmas shopping, wrapping gifts, decorating the tree etc.  Make the day completely about the child.  If their birthday falls on the 24, 25 or 26th then try and celebrate a few days before their birthday.

Some parents choose to have thier child’s party in November or early in December when school is still in session and friends can come to the party.

Fun Half Birthday ideas:
Lots of children (and some adults I know) who have December birthdays celebrate what is known as a “half – birthday”.  While they still celebrate their birthday in December, they also get an extra party in June.  If their birthday is on December 24th they would celebrate their half birthday on June 24th.  It’s a great way to make the child’s birthday separate from the Christmas holidays.

Some fun ways to celebrate a half-birthday:
Make 1/2 a cake, wrap presents in only 1/2 paper, use 1/2 paper plates, play 1/2 of games, send out 1/2 an invitation … just cut everything in half that you would normally do for a birthday.  It’s lots of fun and children really like their special half day.
